A Review of Status Epilepticus


This CE will provide pharmacists with a discussion of the stages of Status Epilepticus (SE) treatment; review the York Hospital formulary guideline recommendations of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) used for each stage of SE treatment and review the York Hospital formulary guideline recommendations of dosing and routes of administration and key safety considerations of AEDs.

  • Discuss treatment guideline recommendations for status epilepticus and recommended antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and the York Hospital (YH) acute seizure order set
  • Review York Hospital formulary antiepileptic drugs as detailed in the York Hospital acute seizure order set
  • Recall antiepileptic drugs dosing, preferred routes of administration per the status epilepticus guidelines and correlate with York Hospital formulary
  • Identify key safety considerations of antiepileptic drugs used in the management of status epilepticus

Brief Bio : Joan Kariuki, Pharm.D., is a PGY1 pharmacy resident at WellSpan York Hospital in York, PA. Theresa Langeheine, Pharm.D., BCPS and Dalton Fishel Pharm.D., BCCCP are behavioral health and emergency medicine clinical pharmacists respectively at WellSpan York Hospital. Dr. Langeheine was a clinical pharmacist in the neuroscience intensive care unit until February 2022 when she assumed her new role.
