This activity was planned to meet the needs of pharmacists enrolled in the Shenandoah University Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy Nontraditional Doctor of Pharmacy Pathway.
This knowledge-based online home-study activity consists of recorded lectures with PowerPoint slides and notes, readings in textbooks and journal articles, and 5 online assessments/exams. Case studies within the lectures will enable the pharmacists to apply the information from the lectures to specific patient scenarios.
The goal of this activity is to develop the pharmacists’ skills to assess, evaluate and apply evidence-based information in order to make knowledgeable, rational, responsible and ethical therapeutic decisions regarding the treatment and management of patients with infectious diseases.
Shenandoah University Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
Requirements for CE Credit
Pharmacists must complete the following items by the due dates specified in the online academic course that correlates to this activity to receive CPE credit:
- Review all online lectures associated with this activity.
- Complete and submit all assignments associated with this activity.
- Complete all online assessments/exams associated with this activity with a combined average score of at least 70%. Participants will only have one opportunity to access each assessment/exam and must complete the assessment/exam within the allotted time limit.
- Complete the online CPE evaluation for this activity.
- Identify and classify common microorganisms that cause infectious disease
- Describe and apply common microbiological tests in the treatment of an infectious disease
- Apply knowledge of antimicrobial coverage to determine the most appropriate antimicrobial based on the specific infectious disease
- State the mechanism of action, antimicrobial spectrum, common adverse reactions, pharmacokinetics, drug interactions, and appropriate dosage for the covered antimicrobials
- Recognize the mechanisms underlying and overall impact of antimicrobial resistance on treatment
- Describe the epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic tests, and clinical presentation of common bacterial, parasitic, fungal and viral infections seen in clinical practice
- Determine a rational treatment approach to common bacterial, parasitic, and viral infections and provide appropriate monitoring
